Gold Miners Strong, Voodoos Harland named CJHL Central all-stars
SUDBURY – The Canadian Junior Hockey League announced Thursday that a pair of Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League players have been named to the first-ever CJHL Central All-Star Team, which recognizes the regular season’s top players from the CJHL’s three Central Junior A leagues.
Kirkland Lake Gold Miners defenceman Ethan Strong and Powassan Voodoos forward Steve Harland were two of six players selected to the CJHL Central all-star squad.
Also selected were goaltender Justin Kapelmaster (Trenton Golden Hawks, OJHL), defenceman Eric Williams (Aurora Tigers, OJHL) as well as forwards Steve Hladin (Georgetown Raiders, OJHL) and Cole Golka (Dryden GM Ice Dogs, SIJHL).
Strong, who was named the NOJHL’s top defenceman award recipient and a first team league all-star, guided the Gold Miners defensive corps for.
A three-year standout in the league, the 21-year-old from Kinmount, Ont., had an impressive 2014-15 campaign for the Gold Miners helping anchor the Kirkland Lake defensive corps while also contributing mightily offensively.
Strong averaged close to a point-per-game this season amassing 46 in total, including 17 goals.
His 14 power play tallies led all NOJHL defencemen and was also the second highest total in the entire league.
He is also committed to attend the University of Wisconsin-Steven’s Point next season to skate for the Pointers.
As for Harland, he starred in his initial campaign in the NOJHL being named both the league’s most valuable player and rookie of the year.
A key contributor to the Voodoos offensive numbers, Harland played a part in 44% of the 213 goals Powassan scored during the course of the regular season with either a tally or assist and was also on the ice for countless others.
The 19-year-old from Scarborough, Ont., paced all skaters in the NOJHL in both assists and points with 95 and 53 respectively.
He also finished third in goals with 42 and had an impressive 31-game point streak during the course of the season.
