Gold Miners NCAA commitment list grows

KIRKLAND LAKE — The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League has announced that its list of players who have committed to NCAA programs for next season continues to grow.

The latest two members of the Gold Miners to commit to U.S. College programs are standout defenceman Ethan Strong as well as forward Connor Thie.

They join goaltender Josh Erickson and forward Zach Pease along with D-man Dylan Rosen who earlier signed on with schools.

Strong, named a first team NOJHL all-star and the league’s top defenceman award recipient, was a three-year standout in the NOJHL.

He also skated for Team NOJHL at the Central Canada Cup Challenge.

The 20-year-old from Kinmount, Ont., had an impressive 2014-15 campaign for the Gold Miners helping anchor the Kirkland Lake defensive corps while also contributing mightily offensively.

Strong averaged close to a point-per-game this season amassing 46 in total, including 17 goals.

His 14 power play tallies led all NOJHL defencemen and was also the second highest total in the entire league.

As for Thie, he finished second on the squad in offensive production with 59 points on 21 goals and 38 assists.

The 19-year-old from Minnetonka, Minn., also had six power play markers to his credit.

In other team news, the 2016 Dudley-Hewitt Cup host Gold Miners announced they will be holding an open tryout camp July 10-12 at Pete Palangio Arena in North Bay.

Cost for the three-day camp, which is open to all unattached players or those with a completed permission to skate letter, is $200 with online registration taking place until July 3.
