HEARST, Ont. – The Hearst Lumberjacks scored three times on the power play and twice more while shorthanded to help them take down the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 8-1 in a feisty Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair Friday at Claude Larose Recreation Centre.
Notching the night’s initial marker, Hearst’s Max Gorzelnik came out from the end boards and sent a backhand through Kirkland Lake netminder Graydon Mole 13:14 into the first period.
Down a skater entering the second session, the Lumberjacks struck in the opening minute with Cooper Moore laying in a backhand in between the hash marks where Will Robinson whipped it in.
The home side kept coming and went up by three as Tyler Patterson collected his 23rd tally of the season, which came during a Hearst power play, by promptly finishing off a DonHeaven Veilleux feed.
A five-on-three aided in a fourth Lumberjacks marker when Liam Boswell cranked in a one-timer off a cross-ice pass from Noah Janicki.
Still shorthanded, the Gold Miners dashed Tristan Boileau’s shutout bid at 6:02 when Tyler Genovese poked in a Cameron Lee pass with one hand on his stick.
A third extra-man effort put the game away for a hosts midway through the period when Aiden Kallin blasted one in from the slot while they were up two skaters.
Busting it open, Maddoc Newton made it 6-1 by stuffing in a loose puck at 12:41 before teammate Veilleux came right back and converted and pumped one over the glove of Mole.
Capping off the one-sided result, Robinson raced down the ice and scored with the Lumberjacks down a player late to wrap things up.
The win sees Hearst move to 16-11-3-2 and saw the Gold Miners fall to 7-21-3-1.
