KIRKLAND LAKE, ON – Darby McCarthy and Jack Ohlund both scored in the shootout while Anthony Zolezzi made two shootout stops as the Soo Eagles battled back for a 4-3 shootout victory over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners at the Joe Mavrinac Community Centre on Friday night.
McCarthy and Ohlund both used crafty dekes to their forehand which got by Gold Miners netminder Graydon Mole.
Jacob Lamoureux and Jason Towindo could not solve Zolezzi to end the shootout after two rounds.
McCarthy also added a third period tally for the visiting Eagles.
Inde Abresch scored twice in the losing cause for the Gold Miners.
The Gold Miners struck first as Inde Abresch banged home a rebound off a shot from Cole Ellis that beat Eagles goalie Anthony Zolezzi to make it 1-0 Miners only 34 seconds in.
Late in the first off a defensive zone faceoff, the Eagles burst out of the zone as Dylan Szabo fed Cooper Fredericks for his 5th at 16:25 to even the score at 1-1.
Less than 30 seconds later Landon Stevens got a feed in the slot from Nolan Hendry and the quick release fooled Graydon Mole to make it 2-1 Eagles after 20 minutes.
Early in the second, the Miners struck early again as Abresch got a feed in the slot and his quick release beat Zolezzi to even it at 2-2 only 19 seconds into the middle frame.
The Eagles regained the lead on a shorthanded opportunity as Alex Freund’s shot was stopped by Mole and McCarthy’s great second effort helped him get it past the Miners goalie for a 3-2 Eagles lead at 9:06.
Again the Gold Miners cashed in early in a period, this time it was 1:51 of the third when Jacob Lamoureux recovered a shot through traffic and the rebound beat Zolezzi for a 3-3 tie.
The game stayed that way through the rest of the third period and the five-minute overtime session.
