Storm double-up Gold Miners

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Iroquois Falls Storm got two goals from defenceman Bruce Grey as part of a 4-2 victory over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Vaive Hickey gave the Gold Miners the lead, 11:32 into the contest, when he wheeled out from the side boards and into the slot where he wired one through Virgil Sausset-Plateaux in the Storm net.

Iroquois Falls tied on the power play just over a minute later thanks to Grey, who lifted one in through traffic from the right point.

Still tied into the second period, the Storm went ahead when Owen Goodwin sent Lucas Peever up ice where he split the Kirkland Lake defence and snapped a shot past goaltender Glen McInnes.

More from the visitors at 6:50 saw Avery Weese spin in the left circle and wire one high, short side, on McInnes to put the guests up by a pair.

Another from Grey made it 4-1 Iroquois Falls as he ripped one through a screen and off the post and in from the high slot while up a skater at 13:06.

Getting one back while shorthanded before the intermission Daniel Rusu went in alone after a rising puck hit off the glove of a teammate and wired a shot into the right corner.

A scoreless third period saw the Storm hold firm defensively in collecting the win on the road.

That sees Iroquois Falls improve to 7-8-0-2 on the year and in defeat Kirkland Lake sinks to 5-9-0-2.
