Powassan’s 25-game winning streak ends, unbeaten run continues, with 2-2 double OT draw at Kirkland Lake
KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoo’s impressive 25-game winning streak came to a close Sunday after skating to a hard-fought come from behind 2-2 double overtime draw vs. the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Sunday in a well-played Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
Despite the result, the NOJHL-leading and No. 2 Canadian Junior Hockey League-ranked Voodoos are still unbeaten in their past 26 outings having gone 25-0-0-1 overall in that span.
Sunday’s match-up saw the Gold Miners grab the early lead as Tyler Fyfe notched his 15th of the season 3:06 in.
Kirkland Lake then went up 2-0 three and half minutes into the second stanza as Stavros Soilis scored on the power play to put the home side up by a pair.
Powassan got that back at 13:10 as Ryan Theriault put the visitors on the board.
Heading into the third period, the Voodoos pressed for the equalizer and were rewarded with 7:45 left in regulation as Dylan D’Agostino notched his seventh of the campaign to send it to OT.
Powassan outshot the Gold Miners 8-2 overall in the two five-minute extra time sessions, but could not solve Kirkland Lake goaltender Ridge Gerads to keep their winning streak intact.
Gerads finished with 38 stops in total to earn a well-deserved point while his counterpart in the Voodoos Nate McDonald faced 26 attempts in the draw to keep his club unbeaten in 26.
