KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos picked two tallies apiece from Mike Levin and Justin Spurrell as part of a 9-4 triumph over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Sunday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

A Powassan power play helped them get on the board off a rush into the Gold Miners’ zone that saw defenceman Caleb Van de Ven dart in and send a feed over to Jacob Dupont in the slot where he whipped a shot past
Michael Purkhart, who was making his NOJHL debut between the pipes for Kirkland Lake.

Countering with an equalizer at 13:46, the home side’s John-Paul Scaringi collected his own rebound and ripped one past Alex Bugeja in the Voodoos’ net following a face off win by Camille Marcoux in the right circle.

Regaining the lead with another man advantage effort, late in the first period, Cameron Lemcke put a nice pass over to Levin who quickly snapped one upstairs for his 18th of the campaign.

Not done there, Alex Little made it 3-1 Powassan at 19:18 of the session as he chipped in a Lemcke feed from in close, only to Alex McDonald blast one in for the Miners with under two seconds remaining to make it a 3-2 game after one.

Heading to the middle session, the Voodoos notched their fourth of the day as Spurrell came down the left wing, made a move around a defender, then whipped in his seventh with a sharp shot at 9:24.

They then went up by three right after handling a two-man disadvantage as Lemcke was sent free down the ice and made no mistake by neatly picking the right hand corner on Purkhart.

Countering quickly, Luca Maiuri brought Kirkland Lake back to within two as he chipped one over the pad of Bugeja to make it a 5-3 game after 40 minutes.

In the third, the Voodoos extended their cushion when Chase MacQueen-Spence drove hard to the net and steered in a pass in front at 6:56 for his 12th tally of the season.

Jacob Hiltz finished off a Ryan Evenhuis feed for a shorthanded effort for the Gold Miners, only to see Spurrell convert on the same man advantage less than a minute later.

Powassan then put the game away when Levin and Finn Acton-Rinaldo both scored moments apart to secure the road victory.
