KL Goldminers to Honour 1971 OCAA Champions

50 years ago this past March a hockey Club from a small Community College in Kirkland Lake, Ontario captured an Ontario College Athletics Championship (OCAA). The Northern College Huskies coached by Howie Parker won the North Division and travelled to Toronto to complete against much larger Colleges – Seneca, Algonquin, Centennial Colleges.

In the Final Game our Huskies defeated Algonquin College 3-2 to win the Championship. Wally Rys was named Tournament MVP and Rys was joined by goalie Don Olmstead and Wayne Davidson on the All-Star Team. Of all the championships that have been won by Kirkland Lake hockey clubs this is the one that seems to be forgotten.

The GoldMiners have honoured many of the fine teams from the “Mile of Gold” – 1940 Lakeshore Blue Devils – Legion 87’s – Holy Name Irish, they are now pleased to partner with the Northern College Alumni and on Saturday, December 4th they will be wearing Northern Huskies throwback jerseys when they play host to the Timmins Rock at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
