The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners have turned to an NOJHL rival for the selection of their new president of hockey operations and general manager.

Former Hearst Lumberjacks general manager Jonathan Blier will fill the roles heading into the 2026-27 NOJHL campaign.

Blier had been with the Lumberjacks organization since 2017.

Under his leadership, the Lumberjacks enjoyed sustained success — advancing to the finals on three occasions and winning the NOJHL championship in 2019.

“On behalf of the entire organization, we would like to thank Jonathan for his dedication and contributions to the Lumberjacks,” said President Patrick Vaillancourt. “We appreciate the time and effort he invested in the team and wish him success. He will be greatly missed.

During his stay with the Lumberjacks, Blier twice captured the Joe Drago Trophy as the NOJHL’s top executive and was also named to the All-Star team as general manager on multiple occasions.

In his new roles with the Gold Miners, Blier will oversee all hockey operations, while also spearheading the club’s broader business and operational strategies.

“Jonathan’s leadership, experience and long-term commitment to Junior hockey make him an excellent choice to guide the Gold Miners moving forward,” the club said, in a press release.

“With a proven track record of success in the NOJHL, this appointment reflects our strong confidence in his vision for the organization.”

Blier said, “When meeting with (Gold Miners owner) Scott (Kohut), it quickly became clear our visions were aligned.

“Kirkland Lake is offering me a great opportunity to be present and actively engaged with staff, the players and the community.

“I strongly believe in building a team of individuals who will grow into a family and develop as leaders both on and off the ice.

“Our goal is to bring a championship to Kirkland Lake while also providing our players with a great hockey pathway through a strong development structure, supporting both their athletic and academic advancement.”

Blier’s responsibilities will include roster construction, player recruitment and development, staff oversight and strengthening the organization’s presence within the community and across the NOJHL.
