IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – Two goals apiece from Owen O’Grady and Yosef Pievsky helped propel the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners to a 4-2 win over the Iroquois Falls Storm in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Saturday at Jus Jordan Arena.
Some sustained pressure from the Gold Miners helped them jump out to a 2-0 lead when O’Grady scored twice moments apart midway through the first period.
O’Grady’s initial effort came at 10:23 as he tipped in a Connell Trenholm point shot while situated between the circles in eluding Storm starter Caleb Shuker.
He then tacked on another by spinning into the left circle and snapping a chance off a defender then flipped into the top left corner.
Notching a third in the session, Mason Brownlee put an attempt to the target during a power play that was stopped, but Pievsky was there to deposit a backhand at 17:45.
Moving to the middle frame, the stanza was tight checking and went without a goal as Kirkland Lake carried their 3-0 lead into the second intermission.
Heading to the third period, Iroquois Falls eventually put one past goalkeeper Asher Ammann when Felix Tremblay opted to shoot from the right circle on an odd-man rush and fired it in for his sixth of the campaign.
Pievsky then notched his second of the evening with the guests up a skater as he spun in the slot and slid a low backhand into the bottom left corner.
On a night where he extended a point streak to 10, the Storm’s Jason Cyr blocked a shot and raced in alone before the wired a shot through the legs of Ammann with 4:02 to go.
That however proved to be the night’s final goal and Kirkland Lake skated off with the road victory.
With the triumph, the Gold Miners improve to 11-2-1-0 overall and in defeat the Storm slip to 5-7-1-0.
