Kerr sets up 3 as Timmins tops Kirkland Lake
TIMMINS – Ryan Kerr set-up three goals, including the game-winner, as the Timmins Rock topped the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 5-3 Saturday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League preseason play at McIntyre Arena.
Skating in their initial home contest in Timmins, the Rock did not disappoint the 450 fans on hand by grabbing a 2-0 lead after one period on markers by Tristan Salesse at even strength and Jared Hester on the power play.
Kirkland Lake struck quickly in the middle session to get on the board with Declan Conway connecting at the 21-second mark.
The Gold Miners then drew level two minutes later during a man advantage opportunity courtesy of a Logan Fredericks effort to knot the score after two periods.
Tyler Romain gave Timmins the lead 1:43 into the final frame and then got the eventual game-winner from Ravinder Shokar with 11 and a half minutes remaining.
Kirkland Lake pulled to within one with 2:21 left in regulation as Jamey Lauzon notched one on a power play to make it interesting.
The visitors then pulled starter Tyler Maazocato in an effort to secure the equalizer, but Salesse’s struck into an open net for his second of the night and fourth of the preseason to wrap things up to give the Rock the win.
Logan Ferrington earned the triumph in goal for Timmins while Maazocato suffered the setback for the Gold Miners.
NOJHL exhibition action resumes Sunday night in Cochrane as the Crunch take on the Iroquois Falls Eskis in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Tim Horton Event Centre.
