KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – A Max Johnson marker 3:47 into overtime was the difference as the Hearst Lumberjacks came back to slip past the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 2-1 Sunday in a tight-checking Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
First period play saw the Gold Miners notch the lone goal in the frame thanks to Noah Cauchi, who picked up his eighth of the season at 12:37.
Neither side would score the remainder of the stanza, as was the case in the middle session, with Kirkland Lake carrying the slim 1-0 lead into the third.
There, Hearst picked up the equalizer with just over six minutes remaining in regulation as Max Griffioen finished off a Daniel Fisher feed to help send it to OT.
In the extra session, the Lumberjacks completed the comeback with Fisher picking up his second assist of the game as he and Troy Daniels set-up Johnson, who ended it to give the visitors the victory.
Nicholas Tallarico made 25 saves to record the win for Hearst while Dawson Rodin had 35 stops in the setback in helping his side earn a point in defeat.
