KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – Tyler Fyfe had a pair of power play goals to help the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners get past the French River Rapids 5-3 Saturday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
Fyfe helped Kirkland Lake gain the upper hand in the opening frame as he connected twice during man advantages to put the home side up by two after one period of play.
Gregory Trudeau-Paquet then made it 3-0 just 57 seconds into the middle stanza.
French River got on the board by converting during a power play seven and a half minutes into the second thanks to Will Frustaglio.
Max Lightfoot then pulled the Rapids to within one as he notched his fourth of the year at 16:36 to make it 3-2 heading into the third.
The visitors kept coming and tied things up 98 seconds into the final frame on a Max Carbone effort.
However Sam Ellwood supplied the eventual game-winner at 5:47 to put the Gold Miners back in front for good before Trudeau-Paquet supplied some insurance with his second of the night to help secure the victory.
Ryan Winter made 31 saves to record the win for Kirkland Lake.
French River starter Matty Mayhew suffered the loss allowing the five against on 29 attempts while Andrew Rocha made two stops in relief.
