KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The stellar goaltending of Cameron Boville and an overall solid defensive effort by the Soo Thunderbirds led them to a 3-0 triumph over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Sunday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
It was Sault Ste. Marie who opened the scoring midway through the first period when Vincent Bondy picked off a clearing attempt just inside the Kirkland Lake blueline then fired a shot to the net that Jackson Mead neatly tipped through the legs of goaltender Morgan Hyndman.
Still 1-0 Thunderbirds into the second stanza, they then clicked on a late man advantage when a bouncing puck off a deflection by Nicholas Carlson, via a Dreyon Boissoneau point shot, was chipped in over the pad of Hyndman by Felix Sapay.
Carrying their two-tally cushion into the final frame, the Soo added another on the power play when Drew Christian stuffed in a second chance off a wrap around at 5:11.
The T-Birds stymied the Gold Miners in showing their mettle throughout the game in skating away with the road victory.
With the outcome the Soo improves to a league-best 6-1-0-0 and in defeat, Kirkland Lake dropped to 3-1-1-0 with their initial setback in regulation of the season.
