KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – A strong second period helped send the Blind River Beavers on their way as they went on to double-up the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 6-3 Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
It was scoreless until late in the first frame when the teams combined for a trio of tallies, including a pair by Kirkland Lake.
Blind River did score first on a Jacob Kovacs power play effort at 17:10, finishing off a pass by Caleb Minns who spun a fed one through the crease that was banged in.
The Gold Miners came right back to tie it as Christian Genova banked one in off of Blind River netminder Patrick Boivin from back of the goal line.
Not done there, Nicklas Albrecht put the home side on top 36 seconds later as he one-timed a blast off a clean face-off win by teammate Camille Marcoux.
A tying tally by the Beavers early in the second evened things up when Johnny Ramoundos one-timed a feed from behind the net.
They then saw James Ingram snap a shot into the open side off a nice cross-ice pass from Hayden Webster.
A nifty behind the back tip-in by Meguire Naughton, while up a skater, gave the guests a third consecutive marker in the session as Blind River took a 4-2 cushion into the final frame.
A fourth Beavers’ goal in a row came 100 seconds into the third courtesy of Minns, who put one into the open side with help from Webster.
Trading late tallies, Kirkland Lake’s Michael Sulmona whipped one through a maze from the right side at 16:30 before Jesse Dupuis iced it for Blind River in the final minute as Kovacs put the puck ahead to Jesse Dupuis who slid one into an empty net to wrap things up.
The outcome saw Boivin collect the victory as the Beavers won for a 20th time this season while Keaton Lyons suffered the setback for the Miners.
