3rd period outburst helps Timmins shutout Kirkland Lake

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – A trio of third period tallies broke open a one-goal game while Vance Meyer made 15 saves to record his Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League-leading third shutout of the season in a 4-0 triumph over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Saturday at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Timmins carried the play in the opening frame, outshooting Kirkland Lake 24-6, but only scored once when Tyler Gilberds notched ninth of the season at 18:56.

Neither side would score in the second stanza as the visitors carried their narrow lead into the final frame.

In the third though, the Rock finally solved Gold Miners’ goaltender Kyle McNair once more, early on, thanks to Phil Caron’s first since joining the club.

Down a man just over a minute later, Derek Seguin supplied a shorthanded effort for Timmins to put them up by three.

They then capped off their offensive outburst with seven and a half minutes remaining when Evan Beaudry set-up Zach Smith to round out the night’s scoring.

McNair was busy in net for Kirkland Lake, seeing 62 shots fired his way in defeat.
