Voodoos surprise Gold Miners

POWASSAN – A three-goal third period helped the Powassan Voodoos surprise the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 4-1 Saturday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The Voodoos opened the scoring 4:37 into the contest on Jack Zanville’s first NOJHL tally.

After a scoreless middle session, Powassan went up a pair on a Kyle Moore effort.

Kirkland Lake got on the board midway through the final frame on a power play point blast from Ethan Strong.

A Jacob Erwin man advantage effort with 4:25 to made it 3-1 Voodoos before Steve Harland iced it with an empty netter in the late going.

The Harland marker allowed him to extend a point streak to six consecutive contests.

Matt Young was solid making 31 saves to record the victory for Powassan.

Devon Debastos had 23 stops in defeat for the Gold Miners.

The win helped the first-year Voodoos improve to 8-10-0-3 while Kirkland Lake fell to 17-4-0-1.
