GALLERY: Voodoos rally in 3rd to edge Gold Miners

POWASSAN, Ont. – A pair of goals, less then two minutes apart, in the back half of the third period helped the Powassan Voodoos rally for a 3-2 triumph over the visiting Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Monday evening at the Powassan Sportsplex.

After a tight-checking and scoreless opening frame, Kirkland Lake kicked off the night’s scoring 4:15 into the second stanza as Sam Ellwood notched his eighth marker of the season and also extended a modest consecutive game point streak to four in the process.

Battling back, Powassan drew level five minutes later thanks to Gabienen Kioki, who picked up his 10th tally in this his rookie campaign in the league.

The score stayed that way until Aidan Wagner connected for the Gold Miners 2:47 into the third, in his NOJHL debut, to put the guests back in front.

Answering once more, the home side tied it at 12:39 off the stick Rico Rossi then saw Henry Scott provide the game-winner with just over five minutes remaining in regulation to secure the come from behind victory.

With the pair of third period tallies, Powassan now leads the league in goals scored in the final frame with 45.

Voodoos starter Christian Cicigoi finished with 32 saves to record the win to help his side improve to 19-11-1-0 overall.

Kirkland Lake netminder Dawson Rodin faced 21 shots in defeat as his squad slipped to 21-9-0-1 on the campaign.
