SUDBURY, Ont. – Andy Baker’s second goal of the game, 63 seconds into overtime, was the difference as the Powassan Voodoos edged the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 3-2 Wednesday morning in Game 7 of the NOJHL Showcase at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
Powassan got off to a quick start in the contest as Andy Baker outmuscled a Kirkland Lake defender in a battle for a loose puck in front of a sprawled Victor-Olivier Courchesne and shovelled in his team-leading 11th of the campaign at 1:29.
The Gold Miners came back with the equalizer with just over five minutes to go in the frame as Brandon Carr-Ansah collected his first NOJHL goal to knot the affair at 1-1.
Action the middle stanza saw the Voodoos hold the edge in shots by a 15-7 margin, but neither Courchesne or Nicholas Campbell in the Powassan net would allow one to get past them in the session.
It was much the same in the third period as Courchesne was peppered with 18 pucks in the frame, but stood tall yet again keeping the score deadlocked along with eight stops courtesy of Campbell.
However in OT the Voodoos’ Baker finally solved the Kirkland Lake netminder as he jammed in the game-winner off a scrum at the top of the crease.
Final shots on goal in the match-up were 44-24 in favour of Powassan.
