Timmins tames Kirkland Lake in NOJHL preseason opener

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Timmins Rock used a five-goal, third-period-barrage to blast open a close contest Sunday afternoon as they went on to tame the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 9-2 in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League preseason opener at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Jack Kelly and Thomas Sefton were credited with two tallies apiece in the triumph by Timmins.

The Rock also saw Brant Romaniuk; Alexis Tremblay; Travis Poan; Kaeden McArthur and Lucas Lowe find the back of the net.

Scoring for Kirkland Lake were Tyler Genovese and Evan Snyder in a match-up where they trailed 3-1 and 4-1 at the intermissions.

Graham Gee made 16 stops to pick-up the win while the home side’s duo of Caleb Whitson and Jaykob Stone were peppered with 64 attempts against in defeat.

Up next for the Rock will be taking part in the eight-team Cottage Cup Showcase, Tuesday through Thursday, in Wasaga Beach, Ont., which also features the Powassan Voodoos competing.

As for the Gold Miners, they’ll conclude exhibition action with a September 6-7 home-and-home with the Iroquois Falls Storm.
