Surging Powassan wins 11th straight with triumph over Kirkland Lake

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The red-hot Powassan Voodoos continued to soar Saturday as they racked up their 11th straight Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory after defeating the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 4-2 at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

A late man advantage opportunity in the opening frame allowed the Voodoos to get on the board first as Ryan Theriault connected at 17:38.

Kirkland Lake countered with the equalizer just as the session was about to expire thanks to Tyler Fyfe’s seventh of the season.

The two sides also traded tallies in the second period with Brett Hahkala connecting for Powassan while Fyfe countered once again for the Gold Miners as he picked up his eighth of the campaign.

It remained 2-2 until 13:54 of the third when Tyson Gilmour notched the eventual game-winner.

Then with time winding down, Gary Mantz added some insurance for the visitors late as he extended a consecutive game point streak to 17 in succession with just 20 seconds to go on his 18th goal of the year.

Nate McDonald made 24 saves to record the win for the Voodoos while Victor-Olivier Courchesne made 30 stops in defeat for Kirkland Lake.
