Rock rally late in 5-5 double OT draw vs. Gold Miners
KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Timmins Rock rallied with a pair of late tallies, but neither side would convert in overtime as they skated to a 5-5 double OT draw with the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Thursday in a back-and-forth Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
Timmins got off to a good start grabbing a 2-0 lead before the first period was 10 minutes in on Tyler Romain’s 30th goal of the season and Cory Sprague’s 22nd.
Kirkland Lake cut into the deficit before the frame was complete with Alex Storjohann collecting his 20th of the campaign.
The Gold Miners then tied it six minutes into the second stanza on a Stavros Soilis effort then went in front thanks to captain Ashton Amaya at 7:23.
It was then Timmins’ turn to knot the affair as Jordan Rendle, who wears the ‘C’ for his side, supplied the equalizer for the visitors at 13:30.
Action in the third saw Kirkland Lake seemingly take control getting power play goals from Tyler Fyfe at 2:09 and Kevin Ford with 2:29 left in regulation.
Undaunted, the Rock’s Sprague came right back 23 seconds later to make it 5-4 then Timmins drew level with 59 seconds to go thanks to Romain’s second of the evening to send the contest into extra time.
The Rock had a couple of quality chances to win it in OT only to be denied by a couple of splendid point blank saves from Gold Miners netminder Ridge Gerads to help the match-up finish in a draw.
Wayne Mathieu and Dean Kiriacou chipped in with two assists each for the guests as did Amaya and Fyfe for Kirkland Lake.
Shots on goal in the contest favoured Timmins by a 44-35 count with Gerads and counterpart Al Rogers helping their respective sides earn a point in the standings.
Both teams return to the ice Friday with Kirkland Lake hosting French River and the Rock entertaining Iroquois Falls in a pair of 7:30 p.m. starts.
