TIMMINS, Ont. – The Timmins Rock let a two-goal third period lead get away, but rebounded for an eventual 3-2 shootout decision over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Saturday in front of 964 fans at McIntyre Arena.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Timmins broke the deadlock 12:29 into the middle stanza as captain Tyler Seguin collected his first tally of the season and 47th of his career to put the home side in front.
The Rock came back and added another before the second period was complete as Zachary Smith clicked on a Rock power play.
Special teams helped Kirkland Lake come back in the third to force extra time beginning with Ryan Hunter’s opening NOJHL goal, which came via the man advantage.
Up a skater again later in regulation the Gold Miners drew level on a Max Newnam effort to knot the affair at 2-2.
Heading to a five-minute overtime, neither side capitalized, despite some quality chances on both ends of the ice, sending the contest to extra shots.
In the shootout, both teams missed on their first chances, but Seguin went blocker side on Gold Miners’ goaltender Kyle McNair to give Timmins the edge with his club’s second shot.
After another Kirkland Lake miss, Karter Renouf ended it as he snapped an attempt through McNair to help secure the home win.
Seguin also chipped in with two assists to further aid the cause.
Vance Meyer made 24 saves, plus two more in the extra attempts, to register the win for the Rock.
Gold Miners’ netminder McNair’s 47 saves on the night helped earn his squad a point in the setback.
