GALLERY: Powassan runs winning streak to 16 in Kirkland Lake

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. A well-balanced offensive attack saw the Powassan Voodoos rack up their 16th Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory in succession Tuesday evening as they defeated the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 7-2 at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Tomas Yachmenev’s 10th tally of the season put the Voodoos in flight at 14:45 of the first period as he also ran a consecutive game point streak to eight along the way.

Powassan came right back and tacked on another moments later on a Cade Herd effort.

Collecting one of the assists on that marker was Ryan Mills, who now has points in 13 straight league outings.

The visitors added to their cushion nearly eight minutes into the middle session on a Ty Nicholson effort.

Kirkland Lake cut into the deficit midway through the match-up as defenceman Lucas Renzoni’s first NOJHL goal put the home side on the board.

However, the Voodoos potted two more late in the stanza with Jacob Peterson-Galema picking up his opening marker of the season before Seiji Martone supplied his second a half minute later to make it 5-1 after two periods of play.

In the third, Brett Shawana became the guests sixth different goal scorer on the night as his fifth of the year extended the lead.

Making his league debut, Zachary Frescura connected on the power play for the Gold Miners at 6:09 to contribute for his side.

Answering that, Herd picked up his second of evening half way through the frame, to round out the scoring.

In all, 12 different Powassan skaters picked up points in their latest triumph.

Owen Say picked up the win making 18 saves in net for the Voodoos as he improved to 13-0 on the campaign.

Kohl Reddy started for the Gold Miners and suffered the loss allowing five on 30 attempts while Kyle McNair saved nine of 11 in relief.
