NOJHL announces Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week
SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Soo Eagles forward Bradley Hofelich along with goaltenders Victor-Olivier Courchesne of the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners and Aaron Mackay of the Elliot Lake Wildcats have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week, for the period ending Jan. 24.
VICTOR-OLIVIER COURCHESNE, (G) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS –
Taking to the nets at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex twice last week, Courchesne won both of them as his efforts helped Kirkland Lake extend their current winning streak to eight in succession.
Friday evening the 18-year-old Quebec City, Que., product stopped 22 of the 24 shots fired his way in a well-earned 3-2 victory over a strong Powassan Voodoos squad.
Saturday night Courchesne was strong once again as he shutout high-scoring Cochrane 2-0 with a 26-save performance as the Gold Miners became the first NOJHL side to blank the Crunch this season, who currently pace the league in goals scored with 237.
The victory was his fifth straight as he raised his record to 12-5 on the season while sitting second in the NOJHL in both goals-against average and save percentage at 2.31 and .917 respectively.
BRADLEY HOFELICH, (F) SOO EAGLES – In three outings last week the 18-year-old Novi, Mich., native scored in each of them helping lead the Eagles to a trio of victories.
Hofelich began with a tally and an assist in an 8-5 triumph over Rayside-Balfour on Wednesday.
Three nights later he notched the game-winning goal as the Eagles edged the league-leading Soo Thunderbirds 2-1 at Pullar Stadium.
He then capped off his run with a marker in a third straight contest as the Eagles blanked Blind River 4-0 in a Sunday road matinee.
On the season Hofelich has eight goals and nine assists in 25 games with the Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.,-based club.
AARON MACKAY, (G) ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS – Three straight starts by Mackay last week produced as many triumphs for Elliot Lake.
The 18-year-old from Millerville, Alta., began with 25 saves in a narrow 2-1 road decision at Espanola on Wednesday.
He followed that with 16 stops in a win over French River and wrapped up his run by handling 21 of the 23 attempts he saw in an away victory at Blind River.
With the three decisions, Mackay now sits fourth in overall wins with 14 as well as third in average at 2.45 and sixth with a .914 save mark.
