IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – The Iroquois Falls Storm saw Simon Lemieux tally twice, and get credited for a pair of assists, to help propel his side past the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 5-3 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) preseason encounter Sunday at Jus Jordan Arena.
Lemieux connected on the power play deep into the first period to give the home side the lead, only to see Yosef Pievsky counter for the visitors a minute later, with a man advantage effort of his own.
After Lemieux made it 2-1 early in the second stanza, Arthur Seamus McCown extended the Storm cushion to two.
Kirkland Lake’s Owen O’Grady and Reid Lessard of Iroquois Falls then traded goals latter in the session to give a hosts a 4-2 cushion after 40 minutes.
In the third, Lex Lamontagne inched the Gold Miners closer with his team up a skater before Jason Cyr secured the victory for the Storm, via an empty net effort, in the late going.
Bruce Laronde started for Iroquois Falls and got the win while Asher Ammann was in net for Kirkland Lake.
The Storm take to the ice again Thursday as they travel to Hearst to take on the Lumberjacks in a 7 p.m. start at Claude Larose Recreation Centre.
Meanwhile, the Gold Miners at back at it Friday as they host the Powassan Voodoos in a 7 p.m. puck drop at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
