POWASSAN, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League-leading Kirkland Lake Gold Miners continue to click as they racked up their seventh consecutive victory after edging the Powassan Voodoos 3-2 Sunday afternoon at the Powassan Sportsplex.
Max Newnam got the Gold Miners going seven and a half minutes into the contest to give the visitors the lead.
Powassan got that back in the final minute of the first when Dakotah Woods notched his third of the campaign to knot the affair at 1-1 after one.
Going to the power play midway through the second stanza helped the visitors to go back on top as Newnam tallied once again to give him nine markers on the season.
A man advantage effort of their own allowed the Voodoos draw level once more deep into the session as Joe Whittet finished off the work of teammates Eric Allair and Tomas Yachmenev at 17:06.
Heading to the final frame, it was Kirkland Lake who broke the deadlock for a final timeas Patrick Murphy picked up the game-winner 96 seconds into the third,.
Gold Miners’ netminder Gregory Brassard shut the door the rest of the way finishing with 38 saves to pick-up the decision as his club improved to a NOJHL-best 12-2-0-0.
Noah Cauchi dished out two assists to aid the KL cause.
Joe Vrbetic was also busy in goal for the Voodoos as he saw 44 shots fired his way in defeat as Powassan slipped to 10-3-1-0 overall.
