Kirkland Lake blanks French River

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – Allan Menary stopped all 18 shots he faced while Kevin Ford and Stavros Soilis both scored twice as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners went on to shutout the French River Rapids 8-0 Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Ford started things off for the Gold Miners by connecting on a penalty shot 12 minutes into the contest.

Patrick Smith came right back and added another marker for Kirkland Lake 55 seconds later for his ninth of the season.

The home side then tacked on three tallies in the latter half of the second period to take control on a Soilis shorthanded effort along with even strength goals from Ford and Gunnar Wegleitner.

Ashton Amaya added to the Gold Miners cushion by scoring on the power play early in the third while Soilis picked up his second of the night at 6:54.

Kirkland Lake’s Matthew Brassard then finished off the one-sided decision with his club’s second man-down marker of the game with just over seven minutes to go to round out the scoring.

Evan Look chipped in with two assists to aid the winner’s cause.

The win for Menary was his fifth straight for the Gold Miners and sixth overall as he posted his second shutout.

Evan Peltier faced 44 shots in defeat for the Rapids.
