IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League preseason slate wrapped up Saturday night at Jus Jordan Arena as the Iroquois Falls Storm skated to a 6-2 home ice decision over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners.
The Storm began the scoring early on when Landon Trethewey banked one in from below the goal line, 62 seconds into the contest.
Tacking on two more in rapid succession, Iroquois Falls went up by three thanks to tallies from Max Jugnauth and Jordan Mayo.
A fourth on the night saw the Storm spread their cushion when Mayo powered his way into Kirkland Lake territory in the second period, then drove to the slot and snapped a shot past netminder Nolan Nicoll.
They then made it 5-0, via the man advantage, with Jack Jarvis slamming in a rebound off a point blast from the stick of Ben Sherwin.
That also saw Sam Rudner enter in relief for the visitors.
Finding the range, while up a skater, the Gold Miners got on the board as Bruce Grey quickly banged in a loose puck off an attempt from the slot by Zachary Machioan at 16:14.
Building on that, the visitors came right back and added another with Tayvan Spencer taking a drop pass and wiring it over the blocker of goalkeeper Matis Bureau Morel from the top of the left circle.
Picking up some insurance in the third, the home side went back up by four thanks to Trethewey stuffing in a wrap around.
That proved to be the evening’s final marker as the NOJHL’s exhibition docket came to a close.
The two teams will renew acquaintances Saturday in their regular season opener, which is a 7:30 p.m. start at Jus Jordan Arena.
