Gold Miners slip past Eagles 2-1 in low-scoring NOJHL affair
KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – An Ashton Amaya goal 13:41 into the second period stood up to be the game-winner as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners skated to a narrow 2-1 decision over the Soo Eagles Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
The contest was scoreless late into the opening period when Kirkland Lake’s Tyler Fyfe collected his sixth marker of the campaign with 63 seconds left in the session.
Amaya’s 10th then put the Gold Miners up by up two in the middle session.
The Eagles used the power play to get one back before the frame was complete thanks to Bradley Hofelich, who also scored for a 10th time this season.
Both sides tightened up defensively from there with Victor-Olivier Courchesne finishing with 20 stops to record the victory.
Kade Phipps saw 30 shots fired his way in defeat as he suffered his first loss as a member of Sault Ste. Marie, who also saw a three-game win streak come to a close.
Chevy Ford chipped in with two assists for Kirkland Lake as they raised their record to 9-8-2-1 overall while the Eagles slipped to 7-12-2-0.
