In a high scoring affair in East Division action at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex in front of 275 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League fans, the Gold Miners blasted the Timmins Rock 9-4 at the Joe, Thursday night..
On a Rock power play, Jared Hester gave Timmins a 1 – 0 lead at 6:36 of the first with Ryan Kerr and Zach Kercz adding the helpers. 19 seconds before the halfway mark of the first, Kirkland Lake’s Dalton Anderson fired the tying goal past Rock netminder Matthew Nixon with assists from Evan Bidenti and Kyle Lamont. With the Gold Miners short handed, Kameron Shearer set up Joel Fortin on a breakaway to give the hosts a 2 – 1 lead at 12:49 of the first. Brayden Stortz gave the Gold Miners a 3 – 1 lead with his 15th of the season from Sam Oden and Brandon Wolfe 40 seconds into the second.
At 2:07 of the second a Cole Gilligan goal from Nicholas Hautanen and Kyle Levis brought the Rock to within one. Kirkland Lake’s Evan Bidenti set up A.J Rupert for his third of the season at 5:43 of the second to give Kirkland Lake a 4 – 2 lead. Logan Fredericks increased the Gold Miners lead at 6:51 of the second with his tenth of the season, with Jamey Lauzon and Fortin adding the helpers. Kirkland Lake went up 6 – 3 on an unassisted goal at 11:10 by Evan Bidenti, his second of the 2015 – 2016 season.
At 11:23 of the second period, Ty Cousineau set up Konnor Madsen for Madsen’s second goal of the season and gave the Gold Miners a 7 – 3 lead. On a Timmins power play at 12:52 of the second, Zack Kercz scored the Rock’s fourth of the game from former GoldMiners Tyler Romain and Brennan McGuire. Adding his second of the night, Stortz adds to the GoldMiners lead with Marc – Antoine Arseneau and Fredericks earning assists at 10:10 on a Miners power play. Joel sinks Kirkland Lake’snotched the ninth goal of the game at 10:53 of the third on a Gold Miner power play from Bidenti and Blake Anderson. Cole Gilligan found the back of rookie GoldMiner goaltender Tyler Mazzocato’s net at 12:33 of the third with Wayne Mathieu and Levis adding the helpers. Mazzocato ran his record to 5-0-1 in his rookie year,making 16 saves.
