KIRKLAND LAKE – After helping lead the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners to a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League championship last season, Dan Morin will hope to do the same in the pro ranks.

The former Gold Miners defenceman has been signed to a contract by the Knoxville Ice Bears of the Southern Professional Hockey League for 2014-15.

The six-foot-three-inch, 214-pound rearguard spent the last two seasons with Kirkland Lake.

In all the 21-year-old Ignace, Ont. product collected 46 points in 56 games played under Gold Miners head coach and general manager Marc Lafleur.

Morin wore the “C” for the Gold Miners this past campaign helping the club claim their first-ever NOJHL playoff crown along with a berth in the 2014 Dudley-Hewitt Cup held in Wellington, Ont.

He had one goal and eight assists in 16 league and Dudley-Hewitt contests while anchoring the Kirkland Lake defensive corps.

Morin will be joining a Knoxville side that finished seventh in the 10-team SPHL last season with a 25-24-7 record before they eventually fell in the semifinals to the league champion Pensacola Ice Flyers.

The 2014-15 SPHL campaign gets underway Oct. 24.
