KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – Roaring back with five unanswered third period goals, the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners stormed back to surprise the Powassan Voodoos 7-4 Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Kirkland Lake got going just 24 seconds into the proceedings on a Nicklas Albrecht effort.

Moving to the second period, Powassan tied it as Mike Levin finished off a quick give-and-go with Cameron Lemcke as he tucked in a backhand along the ice past the stick of Gold Miners’ goalkeeper Zachary Reddy.

It was more from Levin midway through the second as he banged in the rebound off a shot from the right side.

Lemcke then scored at 13:53 to make it 3-1 Powassan as he finished a chance that was stopped moments before off an Alexander Bradshaw opportunity in the slot.

Late in the session the hosts got closer with Alex McDonald getting credit at 18:59 as a cross-crease pass bounced off a skate and in.

Trading tallies early in the third, Bradshaw notched his 16th overall at 1:15 only to see Kirkland Lake’s Eric de Repentigny answer back a mere 23 seconds later.

Getting the equalizer during a man advantage, Ryan Evenhuis whipped in a loose puck from the slot midway through the stanza.

Not done there, Albrecht banged in the game-winner with just over four minutes remaining as he backhanded in a rebound off a Jacob Hiltz shot from the right side directly from a clean face-off win by Eric de Repentigny.

Getting some insurance from de Repentigny after that as he raced down the ice on a shorthanded breakaway while also using his backhand to convert.

Spencer Jones then capped off the comeback with a man-down empty netter fired from deep in his own zone to secure the victory.

On the night, Reddy made 38 saves to record the win for the Gold Miners while Owen Wray saw 39 shots fired his way in a losing cause.
