Powassan skates past Kirkland Lake

POWASSAN, Ont. – The hottest team in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League skated to their eighth straight victory to begin the season as the Powassan Voodoos defeat the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 5-2 Friday evening at the Powassan Sportsplex.

It took just 18 seconds for Powassan to get going offensive as Jake Staples beat Gold Miners’ starter Marc Audet.

Kirkland Lake countered with the equalizer less than a minute later when Joel Fortin connected with the tying tally at 1:09.

Special teams allowed the home side to retake the lead eight and a half minutes into the contest as Staples notched his second of the period and sixth of the season on a man advantage opportunity.

After Nathaniel McLeod made it 3-1 Voodoos midway through the game, the Gold Miners answered that with Brandon Wolfe power play marker at 12:14 to make it a 3-2 game after 40 minutes.

In the third, Powassan put the game away thanks to another by McLeod, which came while the Voodoos were up a man before Harland fed Tyler Peters for his eighth in as many games at 8:36 for the final goal of the night.

Steve Harland was an offensive force for the Voodoos as he doled out three assists in the victory while Peters had two helpers to go along with his goal.

Garrett Forrest stopped 25 of the 26 shots he faced to help his side improve to 8-0 overall.

Audet faced 34 attempts in a losing cause for the Gold Miners, who fell to 6-3.
