Powassan tops Kirkland Lake to run unbeaten streak to 9

POWASSAN, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos picked up a pair of goals from Tyson Gilmour to run a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League unbeaten streak to nine Friday as they outlasted the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 7-5 at the Powassan Sportsplex.

An early power play helped the Voodoos take flight as Ryan Theriault scored at 2:16 to put the home side in front.

Powassan upped their lead later in the frame thanks to the first NOJHL goal from affiliate player Nick Davis in his league debut at 17:45.

Action in the middle stanza saw the two sides open up offensively accumulating three goals apiece to make it a 5-3 game in favour of the Voodoos after 40 minutes.

After Kirkland Lake’s Zach Bannister put his club on the board at 2:58, Powassan came back with efforts from Cameron Moore and Gilmour to go up 4-1 with the latter’s marker seeing him extend a point streak to six.

Tyler Fyfe’s brought the Gold Miners closer at 8:04 only to see Harrison Israels connect just 13 second later to restore the Voodoo’s margin by three.

Fyfe then picked up his second of the session and 14th overall during a man advantage at 13:32 to bring the visitors within two heading into the third.

Continuing to battle back, Kirkland Lake pulled to within one just 20 seconds into the final frame on a Marshal Nikitin effort, which saw the Gold Miners’ captain notch his eighth of the campaign.

It remained that way until Gilmour connected again at 16:10 only to see Kevin Ford answer that for the guests with 82 seconds left in regulation.

However Powassan secured the victory late on an empty netter from Dylan D’Agostino in the late going to round out the night’s scoring.

Quintin Loon-Stewardson picked up a pair of assists for the winners.

Shots on goal favoured Kirkland Lake by a 44-38 count with Christian Cicigoi picking up the win.

Cade McEwen started for the Gold Miners and allowed five against on 22 shots in just over 30 minutes of work while Ryan Winter suffered the loss in relief as he turned aside 14 of the 15 attempts he faced.
