Powassan scores 5 straight in home win against Kirkland Lake

POWASSAN, Ont. – After giving up the night’s opening goal the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League-leading Powassan Voodoos answered back with five unanswered markers to defeat the visiting Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 5-1 Friday evening at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Kirkland Lake would get on the board first just past the 12-minute mark of the first period thanks to affiliate Hunter Forshew’s second marker of the campaign.

Powassan came right back however with Eric Nagy’s equalizer as he picked up his initial tally of the season at 13:15.

The Voodoos then took the lead 6:22 into the middle session as Harrison Israels connected during a man advantage opportunity.

Eric Allair upped the home side’s cushion later in the session to put them ahead by two entering the final frame.

A pair of early markers in the third helped Powassan put the game away as Ryan Theriault and Tyson Gilmour both found the back of the net to help secure the victory for the home side.

Nicolas Case dished out two assists in the win for the Voodoos.

Julian Galloway made 27 stops to register the win for Powassan.

Cade McEwen started for the Gold Miners and suffered the loss allowing the five against on 36 attempts while Ryan Winter saved all 13 shots he saw in relief.
