Miners Stop The Express 5-1

In Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action, the East Division 7 – 3 Gold Miners hosted the West Division 1 – 11 Espanola Express in Kirkland Lake on October 17th. Newly acquired 18 year old defenseman Sam Oden of St. Louis Park, Minnesota made his first appearance in a Gold Miner jersey on Saturday evening front of 294 fans at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex in Kirkland Lake.

Sinking his tenth of the season, Brayden Stortz put the Gold Miners on the scoreboard first at the 2:24 mark of the first on a Kirkland Lake power play with helpers from Marc – Antoine Arseneau and Brandon Wolfe. GoldMiner Joel Fortin gave the hosts a 2 – 0 lead at 5:43 of the second beating Express netminder J.P Sabourin off a pass from Brandon Wolfe. At 13:11 of the second, Espanola’s Cameron Anklewich solved Kirkland Lake’s Tyler Mazzocato to bring the Express within one with Riley Nadeau assisting on the Express goal.

North Oaks, Minnesota native A.J Rupert fired his first goal of the season to increase the Gold Miners lead to 3 – 1 at 4:12 of the third. Jesse Houlton and Dalton Anderson added assists on Rupert’s goal. On a Gold Miner power play, Arenseau racks up his fourth of the season at 8:16 of the third to increase Kirkland Lake’s lead to 4 – 1 with Wolfe and Stortz registering helpers on Arseneau’s goal.

At the 9:01 mark of the third, Houlton scores his first of the season to sink Kirkland Lake’s fifth goal of the game on a power play to give the Gold Miners a 5 – 1 lead with assists from Joel Fortin and Evan Bidenti.

The 3 Stars of the night were, #3 Goaltender Tyler Mazzocato, #2 Captain Brandon Wolfe & the 1st Star, Marc-Antoine Arseneau.
