Kirkland Lake spoils Timmins’ home opener

TIMMINS, Ont. – Fresh off a four-point night in his Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League debut Friday, Kirkland Lake Gold Miners forward Chevy Ford added a pair of goals Saturday as they earned a 4-3 decision over the Timmins Rock in their home opener at McIntyre Arena.

Special teams allowed the Gold Miners to pick up the lone marker of the opening 20 minutes as William Miziuk notched his first NOJHL tally during a man advantage opportunity at 11:14.

Action in the middle session saw Cory Sprague tie it for Timmins 60 seconds into the frame.

The two sides then traded offensive efforts later in the period Ford putting the visitors back in front at 14:37 only to see the Rock counter three and a half minutes later on Marcus Blackned’s initial league goal.

Wayne Mathieu gave Timmins their first lead of the night five minutes into the third, but Taylor Urch levelled the proceedings a couple shifts later on his first of the campaign.

Ford then buried the game-winner with 8:27 to go as he rounded out the scoring.

Miziuk, Austin Ramirez and T.J. Oricchio each collected two assists apiece for the Gold Miners.

Shots on goal in the contest were 48-37 in favour of the Rock with Jeffrey Veitch registering the win and Matt Nixon the loss.
