Mathieu the hero as Timmins slips by Kirkland Lake in OT

TIMMINS, Ont. – Wayne Mathieu scored the game-winning goal with 55 seconds left in the first overtime as the Timmins Rock slipped past the Kirkland Lake Gold Miner 3-2 Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at McIntyre Arena.

Kirkland Lake opened the scoring a minute and a half into the contest thanks to a Matthew Brassard effort.

Timmins countered with the equalizer at 13:33 of the opening frame compliments of Spencer Sequi’s second of the season to knot the affair at 1-1 after one.

A Rock power play allowed them to go up 2-1 after 40 minutes when Tyler Romain supplied a man advantage effort at 15:03 of the second.

It stayed that way until late in regulation when the Gold Miners struck to force OT as Brassard notched his second of the night with 81 seconds to go.

Heading into extra time it was Mathieu who won it for Timmins as he beat Kirkland Lake starter Victor-Olivier Courchesne for his ninth goal of the season to give the home side the additional point on the night.

The Rock’s Bain Cunningham saw an impressive 11-game point streak come to an end despite the win while teammate Marcus Blackned had a six-gamer snapped.

Matthew Nixon made 27 saves to record the decision for Timmins with Courchesne facing 21 shots in defeat for Kirkland Lake.
