Tristen Hazlett scores his first of five goals to lead the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners to a 13-4 win over Mattawa Saturday night in NOJHL action.

KIRKLAND LAKE - Tristen Hazlett fired five goals and added one assist to power the hometown Kirkland Lake Gold Miners past the Mattawa Blackhawks 13-4 Saturday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.

Luc Soares opened the scoring for Kirkland Lake just over nine minutes into the opening frame. A minute and a half later Hazlett picked up his first marker on a power play. Less than two minutes later Tyler Romain made it a 3-0 game. Mattawa came back to make it a 3-1 contest but the Miners’ Joel Fortin scored shorthanded with just under four minutes left in the period to make it 4-1 after twenty minutes.

Hazlett added another goal number two less than a minute into the second period but Mattawa came back six minutes later to make it a 5-2. Then Fortin and Jeremy Dumont scored back-to-back goals to make it a 7-2 contest. Mattawa added their third goal of the game midway through the frame and Kirkland Lake had a 7-3 lead going into the third period.

The third period saw more fire power from Hazlett as he scored two more goals to give the Miners a 9-3 lead. The onslaught continued as Ethan Strong, Steven Babin, Soares and once again Hazlett scored for Kirkland Lake. Mattawa would add one more to their total to make it a 13-4 final.

Kenny Fitzgerald picked up the win for Kirkland Lake.
