Week in Review

The Gold Miners continued their winning ways in the second week of the young season by winning all 3 games they played to stay undefeated and extend their winning streak to 5 Games. The impressive 5-0 record has the Gold Miners sitting in first place in the 8 team league as they remain the only undefeated team. The week started off with the first road victory of the season in a tough battle against the Nickel Barons in Sudbury. The team was lead by two goal performances from Kyle Bishop and Mathieu Lecompte who continued his hot streak from week one. Lecompte leads the league in scoring to date with 9 points and 6 goals. Game two featured the Miners against the nationally ranked and perennial league powerhouse Soo Thunderbirds. In arguably their best overall effort of the season the team prevailed by a score of 3-0 on the strength of a 2 goal performance from Tanner Lafrance and shut-out goaltending from Marc Audet. The third game of the week proved to be the toughest against arch rival Iroqouis Falls. In spite of outshooting the Eskis by a wide margin the team had to rely on a late game tally from Austin Rust and a Stevin Babin winning goal in the 2nd overtime period to prevail 2-1 over the pesky Eskimos. For the second week in a row one of the Gold Miners was recognized as one of the “3 Stars” of the NOJHL for the week. Last year first all-star Defenseman, Jeremy Picard-Fiset was honoured as he continued his strong play which has him 3rd overall in points for the season with 6. The Saturday night game against the Thunderbirds featured the largest home crowd to date as 504 fans attended.

Roster Moves

Head Coach /GM, Marc Lafleur continues to tinker with his undefeated line-up as several roster changes were completed:

Goaltender Kenny Fitzgerald was acquired from The Kelowna Chiefs
Forward Zach Pease was acquired from The Trenton Hawks
Defenseman Tyler Ploeg was traded to Blind River
Defensman Jake Mottershaw left the team to return home
Defenseman Dylan Rosen was acquired from the Odessa Jackalopes

Lafluer stated, “All of the teams in the league will continue to improve as the season progresses and it is important that we do not just get complacent with our early season success. We need to make any changes that make us a better team and give us the best chance of going after a league championship.”

Upcoming

The team will have a light schedule in the third week with only one game on tap at home on Friday night against the Elliott Lake Bobcats. A large crowd at the game will continue to inspire the team to excel. The Gold Miner featured player of the week will be new team captain Dan Morin (#2).
