Gold Miners crush Rock in NOJHL preseason opener

KIRKLAND LAKE – Brandon Wolfe tallied twice and set-up another to impress in his debut as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners dropped the Timmins Rock 8-2 Friday evening in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League preseason opener at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Kirkland Lake pressed the attack in the opening 20 minutes outshooting Timmins 20-7, but would only score once on a Dalton Anderson marker at 3:08.

The Gold Miners continued to mount offensive pressure in the middle session and were rewarded with four more markers to take command of the contest.

After Wolfe notched his first of the night 61 seconds into the stanza, beating Rock starter Logan Ferrington, the home side tacked on three more on efforts supplied by Kameron Schearer, Alexi Rivet and another by Wolfe.

A quick strike off the stick of Joel Fortin made it 6-0 early in the third while Maxime Choquette extended the cushion to seven as he connected on the power play at 2:03.

Timmins put an end to Gold Miners’ netminder Marc Audet shutout bid at 5:42 as Tristan Salesse found the back of the net.

Midway through the final frame Salesse added one more for his second of the exhibition season.

Logan Fredericks capped off the night’s scoring in the final moments of the contest as Kirkland Lake improved to 1-0 early in preseason play.

Brayden Stortz dished out a pair of assists for the Gold Miners in the triumph.

Audet went the distance for Kirkland Lake, making 21 overall in picking up the victory.

Ferrington played two periods allowing five against while stopping 30 shots in defeat.

Jaedon Giguerre saw 10 attempts in 20 minutes of relief for the Rock.

The two sides will finish off a weekend home-and-home Saturday as they meet in Timmins with 7:30 p.m. start at McIntyre Arena.
