Eagles soar past Gold Miners 5-2

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Soo Eagles got a pair of tallies from Jacob Palmerio along with three assists courtesy of Nick Trecroce to help them defeat the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 5-2 Saturday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Pullar Stadium.

Action in the opening 20 minutes saw each side score twice as Zac McKenna and Palmerio connected for Sault Ste. Marie while Kelsey Katchuik and Kevin Ford, who got his with 48 seconds left in the period, countered for Kirkland Lake.

A carryover power play helped the Eagles get the eventual game-winner 12 seconds into the middle session as Palmerio notched his second of the night and 13th overall to put the home side up 3-2.

The Soo came right back on the next shift and scored again on Bradley Hofelich’s 14th at 1:02.

Brendan Schultz then added another for the Eagles at 7:15 in what would turn out to be the final goal of the game.

Kade Phipps made 27 saves to pick up the win in net.

Victor-Olivier Courchesne started for the Gold Miners and suffered the loss allowing four against on 31 attempts while newcomer Allan Menary saved five of six in just over nine minutes of relief.
