GALLERY: Cavallani collects late game-winner as Gold Miners end Eagles win streak at 4

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – A Max Cavallini goal with just 74 seconds remaining in regulation proved to be the decider as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners went on to slip past the Soo Eagles 3-1 in a low-scoring Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair Friday at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

The contest was scoreless into the late stages of the first period when the Eagles’ Jacob Palmerio connected at 19:27 during a Sault Ste. Marie power play for his ninth marker of the season.

Kirkland Lake got that back 69 seconds into the middle session as Linden Namagoose knocked in his third of the campaign to knot the affair at 1-1.

It remained that way through the remainder of the stanza and late into the third when Cavallini collected the game-winner.

He then added some insurance with an empty netter 16 seconds later to secure the decision and put an end to an Eagles’ four-game win streak.

Vito Sica chipped in with two assists for the Gold Miners to aid their offensive cause.

Solid goaltending at both ends of the ice saw Ryan Winter make 36 saves to record the win for Kirkland Lake while Carter McPhail stopped 28 of 30 in the narrow defeat for Sault Ste. Marie.
